OTS II - POSTER RESEARCH + IDEAS
In order to gain inspiration on the style of collage I would like to do for my film poster, I researched into collage artists/photographers...

Raoul Hausmann
Raoul Hausmann was an Austrian artist and writer. One of the key figures in Berlin Dada, his experimental photographic collages, sound poetry and institutional critiques would have a profound influence on the European Avant-Garde in the aftermath of World War I.
- Hausmann abandoned painting in 1923 and centred his work on photography. He invented an apparatus known as the Optophone, which turned kaleidoscopic forms into music. As well as sound poetry, Hausmann’s body of work contains photograms, rayograms and pictograms.
- Below I have shown my favourite piece of work from this artist. When becoming one of the founders of the “Berlin incarnation of Dada”, Hausmann searched for “vital, disruptive and realistic art”, which he pieced together to make symbolic and explosive new images.
- This self portait is from this series of work. It is titled “ABCD” and is a self portrait. His face with the letters inside his mouth is a reference to his work as a poet, whilst the letters “VOCE” (Voice in Italian) reiterate this.
- The letters ABCD, a prototypical poem, are clinched in the artist's teeth.
- I was inspired by the way Hausmann used the self portrait as a way to give his viewer an insight into one of his true passions, poetry, through references within the collage (letters in his mouth, the word "VOCE")
- Although they may not be directly linked to me, I would like to incorporate a reference in my film poster, which could lead to a deeper meaning of the narrative.
MAN RAY
Man Ray was an American visual artist. He was a significant contributor to the Dada and Surrealist movements. He produced major works in a variety of media but considered himself a painter above all.
- Though informally related to the Dada and Surrealist movements, Man Ray contributed massively to "avant-garde, fashion and portrait photography", in particular with his solarised and isomorphic portraits of Lee Miller.
- Ray’s photomontages play with femininity and form, evident in his multiple exposures of "Alice Prin, better known as Kiki de Montparnasse, and Dora Maar."
- Ray's multiple exposure of Dora Maar in 1936 is my personal favourite. I found the use of Maar's hands as a way to frame her face a clever technique. The hand used for this is also silhouetted, making it more defined.
- Maar's hands against the cracked window can be a representation of wanting to escape, whether this is from a specific place or person. The silhouetted hands could be seen as a representation of her inner self wanting to break out also.
- I was inspired by the way the image allows the viewer to create their own theories of what Maar and Ray are trying to say, via the body language (hands) and facial expressions of Maar.
FILM PLOT:
- The genre of my film will be a biographical drama film.
- My film is set in the late 80s/early 90s in Providence, Rhode Island.
- It will be based on the mind, showcasing the dark and bright sides of it, and how our thoughts, feelings and emotions can dictate which side of the mind we end up on.
In the film, we follow the protagonist, Matthew, on his journey of life. We witness how his mistakes from the past haunt him and take control of future decisions he has to make in order to survive.
- Matthew was a hired hitman who would kill highly wanted criminals in the city of Boston. When his mothers life was taken, he chose to leave this life behind and start fresh.
- He moves to Providence to escape the past. In his move, Matthew comes across a familiar face which brings him back to the dark side of his mind. We see flashbacks situations that happened in the past that have effected Matthew. (This is how the audience learns about Matthew.)
- The familiar face, Lucy, who was his lover before Matthew became involved with crime.Together they re-kindled their love and begun a fresh life in Providence.
- After a few months of living a happy life, Matthew returns home to find Lucy killed. With his mind spiralling out of control, he goes back to Boston to find and kill his old boss, Simon. However Matthew is defeated and killed.
POSTER PLANNING
- Below I selected film posters that could be related to the theme of mental health and personal troubles
- Although not all of them are intentionally linked to mental health, I felt that in some ways there are deeper meanings that can be interpreted in this way.
- Below  I have shown a brainstorm I created, listing the ideas I had that I could associate to the idea of duel personalities and sides of the soul/mind. My main focus when creating these ideas was to come up with something relevant to the theme, however something that was also doable with the resources I have at home.
- From my four ideas I have decided to select the top right plan, where I will take a portrait and distort the face to show the split personality.
- The distortion will link to a "clouded mind" - (when a person is slightly less wakeful or aware than normal.) This will reference when the hitman was less aware of his actions, whilst the normal side will link to his time in Providence.
- The stars in the background will reference "hope/joy" in a dark time, whilst the bokeh of the stars will again link to the "clouded mind".
Below I have selected some imagery which will link to the style of photography I will be attempting to do.

Louis Dazy:
- Louis Dazy is a visual artist/photographer from Paris, France.
- Dazy started photographing professionally 3 years ago (2016/2017). She used photography as a way to make memories, photos she can look at later on in life and feel the same way as when she shot them.

- I was inspired by the complexity of the layering in her images. She did this on film, which is a talent in itself, however the way she has composed these double exposures creates a story in the image.
- An example being the fourth image along, Dazy has used the ray of light to draw our attention to the viewers eyes, which are looking at us, but slightly angled to the bottom right of the image, drawing us to this scene of a homeless man outside a hotel.
- This effect can be used to make a unique storyline in images, and this is something I plan to take on board when creating my poster.
FILM POSTER RESEARCH:

COLOUR OUT OF SPACE
Color Out of Space is a 2019 American science fiction cosmic horror film.
- "After a meteorite lands in the front yard of their farm, Nathan Gardner and his family find themselves battling a mutant extraterrestrial organism that infects their minds and bodies, transforming their quiet rural life into a technicolor nightmare.

- In this film poster I really liked the colour scheme, with the purple/teal colours blending in really well with the sky, whilst going with the theme of space.
- There is a split between the hero and the victims, which is shown through the split in the middle, as well as through the facial expressions (hero = strong and serious, victims = scared and hurt)
- The typography was also one of my favourite parts. I like the style of font and the way it joins together. I feel that it gives off a 70's vibe.
STAR WARS - THE LAST JEDI:
- The last Jedi is a 2017 American space opera film written and directed by Rian Johnson.
- In this film, Rey seeks to learn the ways of the Jedi under Luke Skywalker, its remaining member, to reinvigorate the Resistance's war against the First Order.

- I was inspired by the red overlay on this poster. The colour red signifies danger and power, which is what both of these characters are.
- I also like the contrast between the red and light blue rays of light - this can signify a good and bad side in the film
- Lastly, the close up portraits are very close and personal. Having the subjects looking directly at the camera creates an intense feel, making the poster even more powerful.
2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY:
2001: A Space Odyssey is a 1968 epic science fiction film produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick. In the movie, the Discovery One and its revolutionary super computer seek a mysterious monolith that first appeared at the dawn of man.

- I liked the way the poster used the lines as a way to compose, and draw attention to the main subject, who is also looking directly at you, to reiterate that he is the main subject
- Looking closely at the blurred background, it appears as the inside of a space-ship travelling at a high speed. Having this in the background shows the audience what the movie is about (space travel).
